31st July-4th August & 7th-11th August 2017
Making copies of master works was an essential part of traditional painters training. It was used as a method to study great paintings in detail and understand the techniques used to make them. On this course you’ll do the same, gaining a deeper insight into why these paintings are held up as masterworks while broadening your own artistic repertoire.
Choose between a range of high quality reproductions or if you have a particular painting in mind get in touch to discuss it.
Christopher Clements will guide you through the necessary process to make your own copy of a master painting. Each course introduces a new work but you’re also welcome to copy any of the paintings studied on the previous courses, these have included Rembrandt’s Self Portrait as The Apostle Paul and Vermeer’s Milkmaid.
You’ll learn about the methods used to layer the painting along with the palette used by the original artist as you build up your own copy week by week.
Main stages covered include:
- blocking in
- impasto underpainting
- grisaille first painting
- working up the colour
- colour glazing & finishing
No previous experience of these techniques is necessary as Christopher will be show you how to complete each stage. Copies are perfect for learning about oil painting techniques as the artistic interpretation has already been done for you by the original artist, leaving you free to study their approach and method.
