What You’ll learn

This Workshop will show you how to get the proportion and structure of the head right to give your portraits a great foundation.

Have you ever wanted to draw portraits but…

  • don’t know where to start?
  • feel that your portrait drawings need more structure?
  • stop life drawings when you get to the head?

Whether you want to draw portrait sketches of friends and family, improve your life drawing or create a solid foundation for portrait paintings, this workshop with Christopher Clements will provide you with a flexible set of skills that you can use for your own creative purposes.

The workshop will take you through everything you need to know to draw the foundations of believable head studies including:

  • Head structure and placement of the features
  • Orientation and connection to the body
  • Key landmarks & what to look out for

You will develop your drawing abilities starting with the fundamentals of gesture and proportion. This is an essential foundation for convincing, dynamic portraits. From here you’ll work through the main structures of the head allowing you to draw the features and smaller details with confidence.

  • Capture the gesture & orientation of the head
  • Develop your sense of proportion & structure
  • Place the features with confidence

The approach is designed to build your drawings in a logical way by making one decision at a time, each stage informing the next.

By the end of the workshop you’ll be familiar with an approach which will help you draw well proportioned heads with dynamic gesture and accurately placed features. This framework will enable you to draw with confidence and imagination in your own work.
