Northern Realist is based in AWOL Studios, Ancoats, Manchester. It was set up by Christopher Clements and runs regular courses in figurative drawing and painting. The teaching is based on time honoured techniques and disciplines, emphasising strong draughtsmanship as a foundation for figurative painting. Good observational drawing skills are often over looked in current art education but are essential, not only for figurative drawing and painting, but also a wide range of visual arts such as animation, fashion and all forms of design.

The courses are taught in a professional painting studio, fully equipped with easels and a great lighting set up, all students need bring are their materials. This type of training requires a high level concentration and application but the rewards are enormous. The teaching approach is structured so that complex concepts are broken down into sensible stages. Each one provides the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle the next. While the aproach is carefully structured, the emphasis is on individual development. The aim of Northern Realist is not technical expertise for the sake of it but to teach students how to use traditional techniques within and to the benefit of their own work.

Christopher Clements, a professional painter who studied Fine Art Painting at Manchester Metropolitan University and went on to graduate from the Angel Academy of Art in Florence under the tutorship of Michael John Angel. He has exhibited in Britain, Russia and Italy with various groups including The Pastel Society and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, winning various awards.
